Metformin is an oral drugthat specifically for the treatment of diabetes which help to control blood sugar level in the body. This oral medicine is mostly for the people who are suffering from type 2 diabetes and not for type 1 diabetes, although, it can also be used for other purposes that may not be mention here for now.

- Do not use metformin if it it not prescribed for you by your medical doctor.
- Do not use metformin if you’re allergic to it.Â
- Call your medical doctor for treatment with insulin if you’re in a state of diabetic ketoacidosis.Â
- If you have heart diseases or liver diseases ensure your doctor is aware before taking metformin.Â
- Stop taking metformin at least temporarily if you’re to have any CT scan or X-ray using a dye that is injected into your vein.
Don’t delay if you have just a slight symptoms when taking metformin, such symptoms include but not limited to; numb or cold feeling in your arms & legs, muscle pain or weakness, feeling tired or very weak, breathing trouble, dizziness, stomach pain, slow or unequal heart rate, nausea with vomiting. This is very necessary because early symptoms may develops into something worse than you think.
Lactic acidosis is a life threatening condition that can be developed while taking metformin by some people, and the kind of people that may be more likely to do that are; those with kidney or liver diseases, people that are dehydrated, those that drink large quantity of alcohol, if you have a severe infection, and congestive heart failure. It is necessary you talk to your doctor about your health condition, don’t risk it, it is very dangerous.
If you’re breastfeeding a baby, don’t take metformin without your doctor consent. Although metformin is not expected to have any side effect to an unborn child but ensure your doctor is aware if you’re planning to be pregnant or you’re already pregnant.
Metformin should not be given to a child younger than 10 years old. Extended-release metformin (Glucophage XR) should not be given to a child younger than 17 years old.
